Mr Alan Doherty

(Clinical Director)

Mr Alan Doherty is one of the UK’s most renowned prostate cancer specialists.

Mr Doherty, MBBS, BSc, MD, FRCS (Urol), FEBU has completed one of the largest caseloads of prostatectomies in the UK, undertaking more than 3,000 operations. He is recognised for his expertise in nerve-sparing techniques that reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction and incontinence from prostate cancer surgery and has published extensive results from his nerve-sparing procedures. He was voted one of the UK’s top ten prostate cancer specialists in a national poll of consultant urologists published in the Daily Mail (2018).

Mr Doherty was instrumental in the development and design of a live online prostate cancer results centre, allowing patients to track their individual recovery and compare outcomes in a clear and meaningful way. The innovation was shortlisted for a prestigious Health Service Journal award.

“Mr Alan Doherty and the team exceeded my expectations. Their surgical expertise has resulted in far better outcomes than I expected from my prostatectomy, and I was amazed at the speed of my recovery. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mr Alan Doherty.” Carl Ward, prostatectomy patient

A recognised UK expert in keyhole surgery, Mr Doherty has performed more than 1,200 prostatectomies laparoscopically. He was also one of the first surgeons in the UK to perform laparoscopic cystectomy (bladder removal) and laparoscopic nephrectomy (kidney removal). Both procedures are acknowledged as being extremely technically demanding.

Mr Doherty also specialises in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlarged prostate, using GreenLight laser surgery, an effective, minimally invasive treatment option. He has completed more than 500 GreenLight laser procedures, is a national trainer in the technique and is one of a small number of surgeons using the ‘third generation’ XPS laser technology.
